🌱 1. Environmental Education & School Programmes
|
|
Welcome to Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles (WCS)! We’re dedicated to inspiring and empowering the next generation through hands-on environmental stewardship and ecological discovery. Here’s a look at the range of programmes, experiences, and support services we proudly offer to schools, youth groups, educators, and the community.
WCS delivers immersive environmental education in Seychelles, tailored to both primary and secondary school students. Our curriculum-based programmes include:
Example: Mahé Primary SchoolAt a recent programme, 120 Year 5 & 6 students learned about beach erosion, mangrove ecosystems, and how reef health is tied to sustainable tourism. They used simple bioindicators—such as molluscs—to assess environmental health. One group’s data led them to create a poster campaign promoting mangrove conservation around the bay. |

🧒 2. Youth Training & Leadership DevelopmentWe specialise in youth conservation training that builds environmental awareness, leadership, and practical skills: Eco‑leader workshops equip young people with facilitation, project planning, and public speaking skills. Training camps on Praslin and La Digue include sessions on bird identification, reef monitoring, and basic scientific methods. Youth-led mini-grants encourage participants to design, fundraise for, and execute community nature projects under WCS mentorship. Example: Praslin Eco Leadership CampFifteen teens aged 14–17 took part in a week‑long leadership retreat. Over five days, they learned data collection with video transects, created native seedling nurseries, and practised public speaking to pitch initiatives. Two teams secured micro-grants for planting mangroves and organising beach clean-ups. |

🔍 3. Field-Based Learning, Research & Citizen Science
Our field research services combine adventure with real data collection:
Island camps on remote granite islands let students learn GPS mapping and coral-reef monitoring using ReefCheck methods.
Biodiversity surveys in forest reserves teach techniques like transect lines and bird call identification.
Citizen science days engage tourists and locals in reef clean-ups and nest-monitoring of endangered bird species such as the Seychelles kestrel.
Example: La Digue Biodiversity Camp
During a summer camp, 25 students monitored giant tortoise populations and mapped nesting success rates. Drone photography helped assess turtle nesting areas, contributing real data to the Natural History Museum in Victoria.
🤝 4. Support for School-Based Wildlife Clubs
We support over 40 school wildlife club programmes across Seychelles:
We offer club starter kits with field guides, ID charts, and survey tools.
Ongoing teacher mentoring and resource-sharing ensure clubs thrive.
Monthly activity calendars guide clubs in habitat restoration, trash surveys, and nature journaling.
Example: Anse Royale Secondary School
Their wildlife club initiated a coastal plant restoration project. With WCS help, they restored 150 square meters of native vegetation and logged 2,000 volunteer hours. Today, the project is a living classroom in itself.
🌍 5. Volunteer Placements & Community Participation
We welcome volunteers and community groups to take part in our conservation efforts:
Field volunteers can assist with data gathering and habitat restoration.
Community volunteers join beach monitoring, mangrove planting, or environmental festivals.
Group experiences suit corporate teams or university students seeking an eco-focused outing.
Example: Coral Cleanup Day, Mahé
Over 80 volunteers cleaned a 3 km stretch of coastline, removing 500 kg of marine debris. They helped document debris types, raising awareness and influencing municipal waste management efforts.
🏫 6. Educational Partnerships with Teachers & Schools
WCS partners with educators to integrate eco-education into standard curricula:
We help develop lesson plans that weave natural world themes into science and humanities.
In-school training days equip teachers with activity ideas and scientific kits.
Shared resources—like field guides and interactive materials—enable engaging, hands-on learning.
Example: Sur La Digue Teacher Bootcamp
Fifteen teachers participated in a training day on mangrove health assessment. Afterward, they launched citizen‑science growth trackers at their schools. Parent attendance at resulting events doubled.
🌿 7. Consultation & Community Outreach
We offer consultancy for local eco‑projects:
Services include ecological monitoring, habitat restoration guidance, and feasibility studies.
We organize community awareness campaigns and eco‑fairs.
WCS connects private donors with conservation projects—planting trees, supporting nature trails, and protecting endemic species.
Example: Endemic Trail Initiative
Partnering with the Seychelles National Parks Authority, we helped design an interpretive trail at Morne Blanc, complete with signage and volunteer-led workshops. Over 5,000 hikers engaged in guided walks in its first year.
🐢 8. Tutoring & Climate Change Workshops
WCS offers direct tutoring support in environmental science:
Sessions on climate science basics, including sea-level rise and global warming impacts.
Lab-based tutorials, such as soil testing for acidity and water tourism planning.
Simulation workshops, where students role-play as policymakers addressing climate responses.
Example: Climate Bootcamp for Seniors
In May 2024, 30 senior secondary students attended a bootcamp on coral bleaching and reef restoration. Over two days, they built “mini reefs” and analysed water-pH samples, developing resilience blueprints for their home islands.
🛠️ 9. Capacity Building for Teachers
We invest in teachers’ professional development:
Short courses include project‑design training and community leadership in conservation.
Micro-credential certificates help educators gain recognition.
Seeds for skilling teachers go beyond nature—into small‑scale forestry, waste reduction, and green‑business entrepreneurship.
Example: Teacher Green Entrepreneurship Workshop
Twenty teachers from schools across Mahé and Praslin developed micro-business ideas based on native-plant handicrafts. Two school clubs now generate revenue from seedling sales and turtle-themed tote bags.
🎬 10. Eco-Media & Storytelling Workshops
We believe that powerful stories can drive real change. Through our Eco-Media & Storytelling programme, young people learn to document, narrate, and share environmental issues using digital tools:
Photojournalism workshops that teach camera basics, nature photography, and ethical wildlife storytelling.
Short film labs, where students script, shoot, and edit 2–5 minute eco-documentaries using mobile phones.
Podcasting and audio storytelling focused on traditional knowledge, conservation heroes, and wildlife myths.
Example: “Voices from the Mangroves” Project
In 2024, a team of students from La Misère Secondary produced a short documentary about coastal erosion told through local oral histories. It won second place in the Indian Ocean Youth Voices contest and now screens at schools islandwide.
🧪 11. Green Innovation & Eco-Tech Labs
Our new Green Innovation Labs help students explore how science and technology can solve local environmental problems:
Maker sessions using recycled materials to build solar ovens, water filters, or simple composters.
Coding clubs for nature, where youth create mobile apps to track trash collection or mangrove replanting efforts.
Green hackathons, where students brainstorm and prototype climate solutions in 24–48 hour team challenges.
Example: G-Tech Hackathon
Held in partnership with UniSey and a local tech hub, the 2025 G-Tech Hackathon brought together 50 students. The winning team built a chatbot for identifying endangered plant species in home gardens. It’s now being piloted with WCS clubs across Mahé.
